Curious

I always wondered, why Jesus actually had to be baptized. Did he have to be forgiven his sins before he could die for those of the other humans? Or was this the equivalent to the ritual cleaning of a sacrifical lamb? Of course, if John the Baptist and Jesus both simply were ancient Jewish preachers and the latter was inspired partially by the former, things do make perfect sense.

Jesus was actually baptised at the start of his travels as a prophet, and he was just one of many. It was already a popular phenominon when Jesus came to get it done. He wasn't killed for humanity's sins until some 3 years later. So I think it was supposed to be interpreted more as him needing to be purified in order to speak/hear/know the true will of god or some such thing.

@Guest: Still, why would God or his son need any kind of purification? Of course you could see this as a sign of humbleness, showing humanity that he really was willing to live as a human and partake in humanities rituals. The whole story and your interpretation of him needing purification makes sense when you do not insist on him being God (or at least not knowing this at the time).
